How the Summer Reading Program Works

  1. Kids from preschool age through 6th grade may register for the reading program. Adults may read to preschoolers who can’t read on their own yet. The reading program runs from June 19 – August 14. Children may register at the Library beginning on June 19th.
  2. Each child will get a reading log where they will record the titles of books they read during the program (or the books that are read to them if they are a preschooler). Families need to keep the reading records (we don’t store them at the library). We would like parents to initial next to each book that their child lists on the reading log. Bring your reading log to the Library to earn “LIBRARY DOLLARS” and have your name entered for the weekly drawing.
  3. LIBRARY DOLLARS: Kids earn 1 “library dollar” for every 5 books read under 100 pages in length OR 1 “library dollar” for every book over 100 pages in length. Library dollars may be used to “BUY” new paperback books at the library from the Summer Reading Program Book Store.
Note: there will be a limit of 5 books that can be purchased per child during the program.
  4. Each week there will be a drawing for a SURPRISE BAG OF GOODIES. A child’s name will be put in a jar for that week’s drawing if they bring their reading log in during the week and have a staff member at the front desk check the log.
  5. All books read must be at the child’s reading level (for example: if a child usually reads fiction chapter books, credit will not be given for reading picture books).
  6. THE LAST DAY TO ADD BOOKS TO YOUR READING LOG IS SATURDAY, AUGUST 14. Books may be purchased with Library Dollars until school starts – but we encourage you to buy your books throughout the summer.
